Diagnosis
<p class="ql-align-justify">A diffuse synovial tumor composed of proliferating fibroblasts, histiocytic cells (some are hemosiderin-laden) and scattered few multinucleated giant cells of the osteoclastic type. There are occasional lymphocytes. This is the diffuse form of giant cell tumor (villonodular synovitis). </p><p class="ql-align-justify">Due to fragmentation, margins of excision could not be assessed.</p>
<p class="ql-align-justify">A tissue specimen taken during the surgical repair of an Anterior Cruciate Ligament injury is being submitted for histopathological examination.</p>
<p class="ql-align-justify">Two soft tissue fragments collectively measured 2.8x2x1.2 cm, totally embedded.</p>
<p><strong><em><u>Tissue related to Anterior Cruciate Ligament, biopsy: </u></em></strong></p><ul><li><strong>Tenosynovial giant cell tumor, diffuse type (so called pigmented villonodular synovitis).</strong></li><li><strong>Negative for malignancy.</strong></li></ul><p><br></p><p><strong><u>COMMENT:</u></strong></p><h5>Tenosynovial diffuse-type giant cell tumor is regarded as locally aggressive non-metastasizing neoplasm. It is often associated with high local recurrence rate (often multiple) specially if not completely excised. Recurrence rate for extraarticular cases is 33-50% and it is 18-46% for intraarticular cases. Recurrence rate is not correlated to any histological parameter and is only related to adequacy of surgical margins of excision.</h5>
